Most times, we have looked at the list of oscar-winning movie titles and thought, “I haven’t seen that, but it is probably good, and I should watch it.” That was the end of it. We never got back to watching those movies. However, now that most of us have Netflix, we might as well catch up on those award-winning movies. Netflix has a large variety of genres, which makes it hard to narrow down your watch-list. To make it easier for you, here is a list of the award winning movies on netflix:

#1 – Dallas buyers club (2013)

A biographical American drama film captures the life of a drug-using, women-loving, homophobic man with only thirty days to live as a result of AIDS. The movie follows the life of Matthew McConaughey in his last few days of life, as he smuggles drugs to extend his deadline.

#2 – Marriage story (2019)

Starring Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver, this movie follows the couple’s coast-to-coast divorce. An actress and a stage director, figure out their careers while juggling marital problems. This movie has won several awards and nominations.

#3 – The departed (2006)

Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, this American crime film won four Oscars and is one of the best oscar winning movies netflix. It is a case of real-life paradox as the police plant an undercover cop amongst their rivals, the Irish mob. Having won an award for the best-adapted screenplay, the movie does more than deliver justice to its original, “Interfernal Affairs.”

#4 – There will be blood (2007)

A silver miner turned oilman, during the 19th-century oil boom ruthlessly tries to acquire wealth. After starting work in an oil well, a gas blowout kills a worker and deafens his son. This is just the beginning of various obstacles in the way of his wealth.

#5 – The Aviator (2004)

One of the most underrated award winning netflix movies, The Aviator is an American epic biographical drama film starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Cate Blanchett. The movie was nominated for eleven awards at the 77th Academy Awards, winning five among which a few were Best cinematography, Best Film editing, and Best Art Direction.

#6 – Inception (2010)

The science fiction action film stars Leonardo DiCaprio as a thief who steals information by infiltrating into the subconscious of another person. Considered one of the best movies of 2010, Inception won four awards for cinematography, editing, etc. 

#7 – The theory of everything (2014)

The biographical romantic film attracted everyone’s hearts as they learn of the life of world-renowned physicist Stephen Hawking. This award winning movies on netflix was adapted from Jane Hawking’s memoir, “Travelling to Infinity: My Life with Stephen,” the movie follows the journey of opposite people falling in love with each other.

#8 – As good as it gets (1997)

The American romantic comedy film follows Jack Nicholson and Helen Hunt in a passionate endeavour that begins with quarrels and slowly morphs into something more. Nicholson’s carefully constructed life starts to crumble as he takes an interest in the waitress who serves him daily.

#9 – Ex Machina (2015)

The British science-fiction psychological thriller follows the story of a programmer invited to a private mountain retreat to discover that he is a part of an artificial intelligence-based experiment. Starring Domhnall Gleeson and Alicia Vikander, the movie won several awards for its effects and editing. This is one of the best award winning movies on netflix.

#10 – Forrest Gump (1994)

This American comedy-drama is based on the 1986 novel of the same name. The movie follows the life of a man from Alabama who unknowingly influences historical events in 20th century America. The film won various awards like Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Acting for Tom Hanks, and more.

#11 – The Godfather (1972)

The Oscar-winning movie relays the story of a crime lord who is attacked and forced to retire, focusing on how an outsider takes over and plots revenge. Starring Marlon Brando and Al Pacino, the godfather trilogy is well-loved even after four decades.

#12 – Blue Jasmine (2013)

The movie received high accolades for the acting of Cate Blanchett. The story follows a previously wealthy Manhattan socialite forced to move into her sister’s working-class lifestyle in San Francisco. The American comedy-drama film stirs your anger and makes you doubt the characters of those around you.

#13 – Lord of the Rings: Return of the king (2003)

Two other movies preceded the numerous award winning movies on netflix. Adapted from the novel by J.R.R. Tolkien, this epic fantasy-driven film starred Ian McKellen, Elijah Wood, etc. If you are a Harry Potter fan, this movie is a must-watch. This is also one of the best adventure movies.

#14 – Moonlight (2016)

The American coming-of-age drama film has won several awards. Starring Trevante Rhodes and André Holland, the film highlights the problems the protagonist faces in adolescence and adulthood. The difficulties with his identity and belongingness are all highlighted throughout the movie.

#15 – Room (2015)

An independent drama film, based on the novel written by Emma Donoghue. Starring Brie Larson and Jacob Trembley, the story follows the life of a mother in captivity and a son born in the same period. Five-year-old Trembley is told of a world outside the room, and the story evolves from there. The ‘people’s choice’ award winning movies on Netflix is definitely worth a watch.

These are the list of the 15 award winning movies on Netflix. To win an award, the movie must be unique in its very essence and not just the genre. The screenplay, the cinematography, editing, special effects, all play a vital role in the judgment criteria. In saying that, the people who watch the movie are responsible for being its critical eye.
