Netflix’s hit series, “Beef,” secured a significant victory at the Golden Globe Awards as it claimed the coveted title of Best Television Limited Series. The A24-produced comedy-drama, starring the talented duo of Steven Yeun and Ali Wong, marked a historic milestone by becoming the first show created by and featuring Asian Americans to triumph in this category.
Creator Lee Sung Jin, while accepting the award, injected a dose of humor into the moment as he quipped, “Our show is actually based on a real road rage incident that actually happened to me, so I’d be remiss not to thank that driver. Sir, I hope you honk and yell and inspire others for years to come.”
Competing against formidable contenders such as “All the Light We Cannot See,” “Daisy Jones and the Six,” “Fargo,” and “Lessons in Chemistry,” “Beef” stood out as a remarkable winner.
Earlier in the evening, the show’s leads, Ali Wong and Steven Yeun, had each claimed their Golden Globes for their outstanding performances in “Beef.”
Released on Netflix in April, “Beef” weaves a narrative around Danny, a struggling and high-strung contractor portrayed by Yeun, and Amy, a successful yet unfulfilled business owner brought to life by Wong. Their lives intersect in a fit of road rage, setting off a tumultuous rivalry that unfolds against the backdrop of their unraveling personal lives.
The series earned critical acclaim for its portrayal of the Korean American evangelical experience and its exploration of various aspects of race and Asian American life. However, it faced controversy due to the resurfacing of 2014 comments by cast member David Choe, which were criticized for their insensitive content. Choe later clarified that the comments were fabricated for shock value.
Despite this controversy, “Beef“ has continued to receive accolades and nominations, including wins at the Gotham Independent Film Awards and upcoming nominations at prestigious events such as the Emmy Awards and Independent Spirit Awards. The show’s creators and cast have acknowledged the controversy surrounding Choe’s comments while emphasizing his efforts to address mental health issues and learn from past mistakes.
