Donald Glover and Maya Erskine are set to ignite romantic sparks and dodge bullets in the upcoming Prime Video series, ‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith.’ The show, which serves as a reboot of the 2005 action-comedy film, released its latest trailer, giving fans a glimpse of the chemistry between the two leads.
In the trailer, Glover’s character, John Smith, and Erskine’s character, Jane Smith, are introduced as lonely strangers who suddenly find themselves undercover in a marriage and tangled in dangerous espionage. The enemies-to-lovers rom-com trope kicks off as they grapple with their unexpected partnership.
The teaser promises a blend of romance, drama, and action, reminiscent of the original movie that grossed $487 million worldwide. However, the Prime Video series offers a fresh twist on the concept. Instead of playing a married couple with hidden assassin lives, as portrayed by Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie in the 2005 film, Glover and Erskine’s characters pose as a married duo for a mysterious spy agency, all while navigating thrilling gunfights, explosions, and chase scenes.
Co-creators and executive producers of ‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith,’ Donald Glover and Francesca Sloane, bring their creative talents to the series. Sloane, known for her work on shows like ‘Fargo‘ and Hulu’s ‘The First,’ also serves as the showrunner.
In a statement to the press, Sloane emphasized the show’s aim to offer a unique perspective. She explained, “This show is about a relationship, it’s about being clumsy humans. It’s about being relatable. John and Jane are offered the chance of a lifetime, whole new identities, and an opportunity to be super spies. Metaphorically, though, they are C- students being thrown into an AP course.”
