On January 3, the music world was stunned as Theo Lengyel, a founding member of the experimental band Mr. Bungle, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with the disappearance and tragic death of his girlfriend, Alice “Alyx” Kamakaokalani Herrman.
Herrman, aged 61, had been missing for exactly one month when her remains were discovered on December 3, 2023, in the wooded area of Tilden Regional Park in Berkeley, California. Her sudden disappearance on December 12 had raised concerns, leading the Capitola Police Department to initiate an investigation amid suspicions of foul play.
While authorities have not yet disclosed the possible motive behind the murder, a significant development came when Herrman’s car was found parked in front of Lengyel’s residence, located five miles north of Berkeley. Initially identified as a person of interest, Lengyel had refused to cooperate with law enforcement.
Theo Lengyel, 54, who is also known as Theobald Brooks Lengyel, is an accomplished American musician. He played a crucial role as the frontman and alto saxophonist in Mr. Bungle, a Bay Area-based rock band he co-founded during his high school years in the mid-1980s, alongside vocalist Mike Patton, guitarist Trey Spruance, and bassist Trevor Dunn.

Lengyel’s tenure with Mr. Bungle included his contributions to their first two major albums, “Mr. Bungle” (1991) and “Disco Volante” (1995). However, his departure from the band in 1996 stemmed from irreconcilable differences with his bandmates, who felt he was not evolving with the group’s changing direction.
A month-long investigation into Herrman’s disappearance finally led to the grim discovery of her remains. During this time, Lengyel had traveled over 600 miles from his El Cerrito, California residence to Portland, Oregon. Concurrently, investigators found Herrman’s red 2007 Toyota Highlander SUV parked in front of his house.
Subsequently, Theo Lengyel was arrested and now faces charges of first-degree murder, with no possibility of bail. In addition to the murder charge, he also faces charges of felony burglary and grand theft auto.
Notably, Lengyel had faced allegations of domestic abuse by his former wife in 2017, which had resulted in a restraining order against him. The couple filed for divorce later that year.
The circumstances surrounding Herrman’s murder, including the method and motive, remain undisclosed at this time. Authorities have sent her remains for DNA confirmation to the Contra Costa County Coroner’s Office as the investigation continues to unfold.
