Seth MacFarlane, the creative mind behind the foul-mouthed teddy bear Ted, has weighed in on the future of the “Ted“ franchise, stating that its continuation will be contingent upon the audience’s desire for more.
With Season 1 of the “Ted” series now streaming on Peacock, the showrunners, Paul Corrigan and Brad Walsh, have expressed their openness to the possibility of additional seasons. However, MacFarlane, the mastermind behind “Family Guy“ and the “Ted” films, stressed that any future “Ted” projects, be it more seasons of the Peacock series or even a third movie, will be determined by “audience appetite.”
Following the release of “Ted 2,” MacFarlane noted that interest in the character had waned compared to the fervor after the first movie. “There has to be an audience for something like this,” he told TheWrap. “You don’t want to just keep rehashing the same character if no one’s watching. I guess there’s a lot of that today anyway, but it’s not really our first order of business, there really has to be an appetite.”
Despite MacFarlane’s cautious approach, Corrigan and Walsh have already begun discussions about potential future seasons, as they believe there are plenty more stories to explore. The current season follows Ted and a 16-year-old John, portrayed by Max Burkholder, in 1993 as they navigate high school and the challenges of growing up.
Walsh, however, acknowledged that creating the current season was a “lengthy process” and largely depends on MacFarlane’s involvement, as he is deeply committed to the project.
The live-action prequel consists of seven episodes and offers viewers a glimpse into Ted and John’s lives during their junior year of high school in Framingham, Massachusetts. The Thunder Buddies embark on various adventures while adapting to the trials of adolescence.
Alongside MacFarlane, Corrigan, and Walsh, “Ted” is executive produced by Erica Huggins, Alana Kleiman, Jason Clark, and Aimee Carlson of Fuzzy Door Productions. Fuzzy Door, MRC, and UCP, a division of Universal Studio Group, are the production companies behind the series.
As the “Ted” franchise continues to evolve, its future remains in the hands of the audience, whose enthusiasm will determine whether Ted’s adventures will continue to grace our screens.
