Steven Yeun, widely recognized for his outstanding performances, has opened up about his departure from Marvel’s “Thunderbolts.” While attending the opening of the Louis Vuitton pop-up in West Hollywood, Yeun shared insights with Variety’s Marc Malkin regarding his decision to step away from the highly anticipated antihero film.
The actor cited various factors, including last year’s SAG-AFTRA strike, as reasons for his exit from “Thunderbolts.” “I think for me, time passing and things shifting kind of pulled me out of it,” Yeun explained. Despite his departure, he expressed confidence in director Jake Schreier’s ability to deliver an exceptional film.
In discussing his future ambitions within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Yeun exclaimed, “I wanna do a Marvel movie.” Although the actor’s involvement in “Thunderbolts” was initially reported in February, Marvel never officially confirmed his casting. The film is set to be directed by Jake Schreier, with a script penned by Lee Sung Jin, creator of “Beef,” and based on a first draft by “Black Widow” screenwriter Eric Pearson.
Production on “Thunderbolts“ faced a temporary halt in May due to the WGA strike, and filming has yet to commence following the resolution of the dual Hollywood strikes. Yeun expressed the challenges he encountered in conveying his sincerity as he had to back out of the project.
When asked about his specific Marvel movie aspirations, Yeun admitted, “I think it’s too early to say that. I probably pissed off too many people leaving, so I’m just gonna say, ‘Thank you for having me.'” He further teased, “I have some ideas, but I heard if you put it out there, you’ll never get it, so I’ll keep it close to my chest.”
While Yeun may have missed his opportunity with “Thunderbolts,” his desire to become part of the Marvel universe remains strong, leaving fans eagerly awaiting news of his potential future Marvel projects.
