The awards season is in full swing, and along with it comes the annual unveiling of the Golden Raspberry Awards, affectionately known as the Razzies. These awards celebrate the not-so-stellar achievements in the world of cinema, highlighting the least successful films of the year. The 44th edition of the Razzies has recently announced its nominations, and it promises to be an eventful one.
Leading the pack of Razzie nominations is “Expend4bles,” the fourth installment in the action-packed yet critically underwhelming “The Expendables” franchise, with a whopping seven nominations. Tied for second place with five nominations each are “The Exorcist: Believer,” a revival of the classic horror series, and “Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey,” a surprisingly dark take on the beloved honey-loving bear.
Superhero enthusiasts may find themselves surprised as both DC’s “Shazam! Fury of the Gods” and Marvel’s “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” have received four nominations each, despite their big-budget productions.
Last year, “Blonde” directed by Andrew Dominik dominated the Razzie nominations with eight nods, ultimately clinching the award for worst picture. The Razzies also faced controversy when they nominated then-11-year-old actor Ryan Kiera Armstrong for worst actress in her role in the horror remake “Firestarter.” The decision drew sharp criticism, prompting Razzies founder John Wilson to issue a public apology and emphasize the importance of acknowledging mistakes.
The Razzies made headlines again last year by creating a special category for Bruce Willis, highlighting his numerous direct-to-video action films. However, after Willis and his family disclosed his struggles with aphasia, a language disorder causing brain damage, the Razzies rescinded the category as a gesture of understanding.
Founded in 1981, Razzie nominations are now determined by a select committee before being voted on by the membership. Anyone can become a voting member by paying an annual fee of $40 or a lifetime membership fee of $500. Despite these funds, the Razzies’ official website remains in a time warp, reminiscent of internet interfaces from more than a decade ago.
