As the calendar flips to 2024, the focus of every broadcast network and streaming platform in Hollywood is on getting back to business following a challenging year marred by historic dual strikes that brought production to a halt for months.
The aftermath of the writer’s and performers’ strikes has left streamers and networks working diligently to solidify their programming pipelines, especially as several scripted comedies and dramas have faced setbacks due to the work stoppage. HBO, for instance, announced that highly anticipated shows like the third seasons of “Euphoria“ and “The White Lotus,” as well as the sophomore run of “The Last of Us,” will now debut in 2025. Other platforms, including Amazon, have had to reconsider their programming due to the delayed production’s impact on their 2025 marketing plans.
With these challenges in mind, The Hollywood Reporter has taken a comprehensive look at the TV landscape to identify which new scripted comedies and dramas produced in the United States might actually make their debuts in the coming year. It’s worth noting that there are no guarantees, as unforeseen factors like global pandemics and labor disputes have previously disrupted even the most significant shows.
Here’s a glimpse of what to expect from each of the major platforms as we enter 2024:
AMAZON
Under the leadership of Jennifer Salke, Amazon has high hopes for its adaptation of the best-selling video game franchise “Fallout.” The big-budget drama, set to premiere on April 12, stars Ella Purnell and Walton Goggins and aims to replicate the success of HBO’s “The Last of Us.” Additionally, Donald Glover returns to the screen in “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” (Feb. 2), featuring Maya Erskine, Sarah Paulson, and Sharon Horgan. Amazon’s high-profile lineup also includes “Expats” (Jan. 26).
APPLE
While the future of “Ted Lasso” remains a topic of speculation, Apple continues to make waves with its compelling original content. “Palm Royale,” a star-studded comedy featuring Kristen Wiig, Ricky Martin, Laura Dern, and Carol Burnett, is expected in the spring. “The Big Cigar,” a limited series, is also slated for spring, and “The New Look” (Feb. 14) offers a historical fashion drama set in Paris. In January, Apple ventures into the world of war with “Masters of the Air.”
DISNEY+
Disney+ without Marvel and Star Wars content is unimaginable. “Hawkeye” spinoff “Echo,” “Agatha: Darkhold Diaries,” and “X-Men ’97” are on the horizon. Additionally, Lucasfilm is set to deliver “Star Wars: The Acolyte” and “Skeleton Crew.”
FX
FX faces scheduling challenges, with “Shogun” scheduled for Feb. 27 on Hulu. “The Veil,” starring Elisabeth Moss, promises a standout performance. Ryan Murphy returns with “Feud: Capote vs. The Swans” (Jan. 31), featuring a star-studded ensemble.
HBO
HBO’s 2024 lineup is stacked, featuring “The Franchise,” “The Regime,” and “The Sympathizer.” A superhero comedy, “The Franchise,” explores the behind-the-scenes of a fictional struggling superhero movie. “The Regime” offers a glimpse into high-society life. “The Sympathizer” boasts Robert Downey Jr. in multiple roles.
HULU
“Mandy Patinkin’s “Death and Other Details” is a murder-mystery drama set aboard a cruise liner (Jan. 16). Joey King returns in “We Were the Lucky Ones.” “Interior Chinatown” offers a unique crime drama, and “Under the Bridge” explores true crime.
MAX
Max brings “The Girls on the Bus,” “Dune: Prophecy,” and “The Penguin.” “The Girls on the Bus” delves into politics, while “Dune: Prophecy” explores the world of “Dune.” “The Penguin” is set in DC’s universe.
NETFLIX
“3 Body Problem” arrives on March 21, following the success of creators David Benioff and Dan Weiss. “Avatar: The Last Airbender” (Feb. 22) generates immense interest. “The Mole Agent” and “No Good Deed” bring comedy to the lineup.
PARAMOUNT+
“Land Man” and “The Department” are on the horizon. “Land Man” explores the oil industry, while “The Department” is directed by George Clooney.
PEACOCK
Seth MacFarlane’s “Ted” prequel series (Jan. 11) takes a nostalgic trip back to 1993. “Palm Royale” offers a star-studded cast, and “Those About to Die” explores ancient Rome’s gladiatorial sports.
As we embark on the new year, the TV landscape promises a diverse range of entertainment options, with each platform offering its unique selection of scripted comedies and dramas. While challenges persist, the industry remains committed to delivering engaging content to audiences in 2024.
