Ed Asner, who caught the attention of everyone on-screen with his distinctive gravelly voice, Ed Asner passes away on Sunday morning. He was 91 years old. His family released a heartfelt statement on Twitter that said, “we are sorry to say that our beloved patriarch passed away this morning, peacefully. Words cannot express the sadness we feel”.
Asner is famously known for his role in ‘The Mary Tyler Show.’ He played the role of Lou Grant. The show was an iconic sitcom in the 1970s. His character was so beloved that Ed Asner ended up getting a spinoff show based around his character. Three of the seven Emmys won by Asner were for playing the role of Lou Grant. He was one of the two actors that won 2 Emmys for the same position in different niches, namely, comedy and drama.

Ed Asner was not only a gem for the 70s. He won the hearts of a new generation by playing the role of Carl Fredrickson in the movie ‘Up,’ directed by Pete Docter. He played the role of a tough guy who has a heart of gold. The film was also nominated for an Oscar for best picture. In the movie, Carl Fredrickson ties thousands of balloons to his house and flies the home to South America to fulfill his late wife’s wishes.
Ed was born in Kansas City, Missouri, on 15th November 1929. He was the youngest in the family of 6. Before making his way into Hollywood as an actor, Ed Asner served in the Army. Ed Asner also played several roles in a series of off-Broadway plays, television shows, and many movies before he got cast for The Mary Tyler Moore Show, which was his big break.
