The 30th Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations have been unveiled, and the race is heating up as two cinematic powerhouses, “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer,” each secured four nominations, including nods for their ensembles. These blockbuster films will go head-to-head for the top prize, competing against “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “American Fiction,” and “The Color Purple.”
On the television front, HBO’s “Succession” led the pack with five nominations for its final season. Following closely behind were “Ted Lasso,” “The Bear,” and “The Last of Us,” with all of them earning four nominations each. “Succession,” which delves into the complex dynamics of an aging media mogul’s family, is up for the prestigious title of Best Ensemble in a Drama Series. Its contenders in this category include “The Crown,” “The Gilded Age,” “The Last of Us,” and “The Morning Show.” Meanwhile, the race for Best TV Comedy Ensemble will feature “The Bear,” “Ted Lasso,” “Only Murders in the Building,” “Abbott Elementary,” and “Barry.”
Warner Bros. Discovery secured the most nominations among all companies, tallying up an impressive 20 nominations for its films and shows, which included “The Last of Us,” “Succession,” “The Color Purple,” and “Barbie.” Following closely behind was Netflix with 12 nominations and Apple with 11.
These nominations celebrate performances in films and television shows released during a tumultuous year marked by a 118-day strike by union members after contract negotiations broke down. The strike ultimately led to a new agreement in November, featuring pay increases for actors and improved residuals for streaming services, along with protections against the use of artificial intelligence.
SAG Awards nominations often serve as a bellwether for the Oscars, given the significant overlap in membership between the Screen Actors Guild and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences. In fact, last year, all four performers who clinched leading film awards at the SAG Awards—Brendan Fraser, Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, and Jamie Lee Curtis—went on to win Oscars for their exceptional work. Since its inception in 1995, only four films have secured the Best Picture Oscar without receiving a SAG nomination for the cast ensemble: “Braveheart” (1995), “The Shape of Water” (2017), “Green Book” (2018), and “Nomadland” (2020).
As the SAG Awards ceremony approaches, it promises to be a thrilling showdown among the industry’s finest talents, with notable snubs and surprises adding to the anticipation. The 30th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards will be streamed globally on Netflix, marking the first year of their multi-year deal.
