In his debut as the host of the Golden Globe Awards, Jo Koy took center stage with a raucous and sometimes eyebrow-raising monologue that drew a mixed response from the star-studded audience at the event.
The stand-up comedian, who was announced as this year’s host just 10 days before the ceremony, wasted no time diving into the realm of humor. Koy’s jokes ranged from playful banter to moments that pushed the boundaries of decorum.
One of the highlights of his monologue was a cheeky reference to Barry Keoghan, the star of “Saltburn,” and his noteworthy nude dancing scene in the film. Koy humorously inquired about the positioning of Keoghan’s character’s genitals, saying, “Where is your penis seated? Down front? That was the real star of the show.”
Koy cleverly incorporated references to several of the top-nominated titles at the awards, including “The Color Purple,” which he humorously equated to the effects of the weight-loss drug Ozempic.
As the comedian discussed the competition between “Oppenheimer“ and “Barbie“ in the newly established category of best cinematic and box office achievement, he couldn’t resist a playful jab at the latter. Referring to Margot Robbie’s character in “Barbie,” he quipped, “It was kind of weird being attracted to a plastic doll,” before playfully directing his gaze towards Ryan Gosling’s Ken.
Koy’s humor extended to Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” where he expressed his love for the film but humorously claimed it needed an extra hour. He also offered a witty takeaway from Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon,” noting, “white people stole everything,” a remark that elicited a mixed response from the audience.
Despite the occasional groans and mixed reactions, Koy’s lively and unapologetic hosting style added a unique flavor to the Golden Globes ceremony. His candid acknowledgment of the short notice he had received for the gig only added to the charm of his hosting debut.
Jo Koy’s comedic talents have been showcased in various stand-up specials on Comedy Central and Netflix, including his 2022 Netflix special, “Live From The Los Angeles Forum.” He has also ventured into film and voice acting, starring in Universal Pictures’ “Easter Sunday“ and contributing voice roles to Netflix productions.
The 2024 Golden Globe Awards, currently airing live on CBS and streaming on Paramount+, promise to be a night of celebration and recognition for the best in the entertainment industry.
