Along with the Midnight Mass trailer, the show’s creator and director, Mike Flanagan, penned a letter which he posted on Twitter, in which he wrote, “As a former altar boy, about to celebrate 3 years of sobriety, it’s not hard to see what makes this so personal. The ideas at the root of this show scare me to my core.”
He adds, “There is darkness at work on Crockett Island. Some of it is supernatural, but the scariest is born of human nature… But this show is about something else as well…faith itself.”
When the series is scheduled
The series is scheduled to release on Netflix on the 24th of September. And while the series is not a part of the ‘Haunting of…’ anthology series. It is, however, connected to the Mike Flanagan Cinematic Universe. The fictional book also appeared in Flanagan’s ‘Gerald’s Game,’ which came out in 2017. As Carla Gugino’s character struggles to free herself from a handcuff, a copy of the fictional book can be seen on the shelf above her. Whether the book’s inclusion is a mere easter egg or whether it plays a major role in the plot of the series is unknown.
‘Midnight Mass’ marks Mike Flanagan’s fifth collaboration with Netflix along with Gerald’s Game, Hush, The Haunting of Hill House, and The Haunting of Bly Manor. According to a multi-year deal signed by Flanagan and producer Trevor Macy with Netflix, Flanagan and Macy will develop and produce new series exclusively for Netflix.
