Paul Rudd pulls final Mac and Me prank on Conan O’Brien Talk Show

Conan O’Brien’s TBS talk show is wrapping up this week, and it wouldn’t be a good send-off without a final performance of what is perhaps the show’s most iconic bit: Paul Rudd’s Mac and Me prank. On the Monday night broadcast, O’Brien was interviewing Bill Hader when the topic drifted to a never-aired Saturday Night Live sketch that Hader did with Rudd.

Rudd appeared from behind the curtain in the middle of the interview and informed O’Brien that he had a clip from the sketch’s dress rehearsal. The clip, in fact, is a sequence from the 1988 film Mac and Me, a poor-reception E.T. rip-off, in which the wheelchair-bound character played by Jade Category goes off a cliff into a lake while the alien MAC looks on.

What followed the prank?

As the Mac and Me tape ended, the camera turned back to Hader and O’Brien, laughing uncontrollably as Rudd sat between them casually sipping from a cup. Rudd wasn’t finished, and after enticing everyone into a false feeling of security by stating that over the years, he had always planned on utilizing a separate clip from Baby Geniuses and because it was the final week of the program, he believed it was only proper to run that clip as well. The video appeared, and it was, of course, the identical Mac and Me footage.

What was O’Brien’s reaction?

In fact, when promoting Ant-Man, Rudd did give the host something new – a clip from Ant-Man with Mac and Me interwoven into it – and O’Brien noted that Paul Rudd has managed to catch him out time and time again through his sincerity, always leading him to believe that maybe this time he was going to see something new, and in fact, when promoting Ant-Man, Rudd did give the host something new – a clip from Ant-Man with Mac and Me.
